CAMPCO TO BRIDGE THE GREAT INDIAN CHOCOLATE GAP
Article Abstract:
The Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Co- operative Ltd (Campco) based at Mangalore says that there is a huge void in the Indian chocolate market which it intends to fill. It currently has an agreement with Nestle India to process cocoa beans and to produce chocolates which will end by December 2000. Campco plans to increase its product range and stand on its own in the domestic market after the agreement ends. It is also processing about 1200 tonnes of cocoa beans for Cadbury at present. Campco produces all types of moulded chocolates along with semi-finished products like cocoa butter and cocoa powder. It plans to procure about 1880 tonnes of cocoa dry beans and produce 750 tonnes of finished products and 1000 tonnes on semi- finished products. (khr)

COCOA'S BLACK FOREST
Article Abstract:
The Government of India had allocated Rs3 crore in the Eighth Plan for the development of cocoa. The price of wet beans was Rs10 per kg in the 1980s and it has increased to Rs17-18 per kg. The demand for cocoa is estimated at 30,000 tonnes by 2005 AD. The production of cocoa is only 7,000 tonnes now. To meet the projected demand, the production should rise by 20 percent per annum. Another 20,000 hectares of land should be brought under cocoa cultivation to increase the production. Mixed farming of cocoa along with coconut and arecanut will be profitable. In the Ninth Plan, use of high yielding varieties and increasing the area of cocoa cultivation are planned. (rk)

2.4 PER CENT RISE SEEN IN DOMESTIC TEA CONSUMPTION
Article Abstract:
Tea consumption in India is expected to increase by 2.4 percent to 640 million kg in 1998 (625 million in 1997). The domestic supplies are expected to be around 630 million kg. Though the domestic consumption is expected to increase by 2.4 percent, it will be lower than the target set for 1998. The fall is attributed to the resistance in the Indian tea packet market. In the past few months, there has been a shift towards loose tea due to the rise in the price of packed tea. (ag) e bags
