A LARGE PILE OF CARDAMOM CARES
Article Abstract:
India's share in world export of cardamom decreased to four percent in 1994-95 from 56 percent in 1970-71. India exported 2,345 tonnes of cardamom in 1980-81, 379 tonnes in 1990-91 and 260 tonnes in 1997-98. The export earnings which were Rs64 crore had declined to Rs8.92 crore in 1997-98. The domestic consumption of cardamom has increased from 35 percent in 1975-76 to 97 percent in 1994-95. The yield per hectare has been steady at 50 kilograms and 70 kilograms till 1990s. The yield increased to 149 kilograms per hectare in 1997-98. The area under cardamom cultivation has declined from 81,000 hectares to 72,000 hectares. The total yielding area under cardamom is 52,912 hectares. The production increased from 3,100 tonnes in the beginning of 1990s to 7,900 tonnes by 1997-98. Kerala contributes 58 percent of the yielding area and 67 percent of the production. Karnataka and Tamil Nadu contribute 34 percent to the yielding area and eight percent and 23 percent and 10 percent of production respectively. Cardamom cultivation is labour intensive. The labour costs account for 60-70 percent of the total cost of production. The cost of cultivation varies in the states. Kerala has the highest cost of production at Rs268 per kilogram. (rk)

CARDAMOM BRIGHTENS UP
Article Abstract:
The price of cardamom had increased to Rs728 per kg in November 1998 from Rs271 per kg in November 1997. The price has fallen to Rs600 per kg now. The price of cardamom in India depends on the demand in the international market. Guatemala produced 14,000 tonnes of cardamom in 1997-98. It is likely to be less by 40 percent in 1998-99 due to hurricane and the subsequent disease of the crop in Guatemala. Inquiries for cardamom from USA show that the production in Guatemala has been hit. The price of cardamom is likely to settle at Rs600 per kg. (rk/kvr)

Cardamom is cultivated only in South India with around 30,000 small growers having very small holdings. At present around 84,000 hectares of land are under cardamom cultivation. In the last twenty years, production went up by 79 percent from 3,900 tonnes to 7,000 tonnes in 1997-98.
