CASHING IN ON CASHEW
Article Abstract:
The net cashew exports from India earned Rs590 crore in 1997- 98. Globally, cashew is recognised as plantation crop but not in India yet. There is no separate board for cashew. Cashew production in India in 1997-98 was a mere 4 lakh tonnes. Consequently, there were large-scale exports. Exports of cashew have increased from 0.82 lakh tonnes in 1990-91 to 2.45 lakh tonnes in 1997-98. This could have been avoided, if there had been a board to protect the interests of cashew growers. CASHEW NYET
Article Abstract:
The cashew industry may see a severe shortage of raw material and increased costs in 1997-98. The domestic output of raw cashewnuts is projected to decrease by 40-50 percent in 1997-98 from 430,000 tonnes in 1996-97. Unsuitable weather conditions, untimely rains and the attack of the tea mosquito pest are the main causes for the decline in production. The domestic processing capacity is 8 lakh tonnes but the availability of raw cashewnuts is only 6 lakh tonnes. India imported 244,600 tonnes of raw cashew nuts, worth Rs818 crore, in 1997-98 against 192,300 tonnes, worth Rs641 crore, in 1996-97. The exports of cashew kernels increased to 79,350 tonnes, worth Rs1,420 crore, in 1997-98 against 68,758 tonnes, worth Rs1,281 crore, in 1996-97. (khr)

GLOBAL SHORTAGE REPORTS PUSH CASHEW PRICES TO RECORD HIGH
Article Abstract:
The W 320 grade Cashew kernel prices have risen to Rs241 per kilogram (kg) in the first quarter of 1998-99 (Rs172.89 per kg during same period in 1997-98). Due to increase in price, export income rose to Rs406.86 crore (Rs367.93 crore). The quantity of exports were at 21,652 tonnes (21,281 tonnes). The rise in price has been mainly due to shortage of cashew at global level. The cashew output in Brazil dropped by 20,000 tonnes to 165,000 tonne, while in Vietnam, the production declined to 110,000 tonnes. In India cashew production dropped to 300,000 tonnes in 1998 season (430,000 tonnes in 199-97). (gs)
