Bajaj Hindustan, a sugar producer, reported an impressive performance during the nine months ended December 31, 1998. During the period, its sales grew by 30 percent and net profit grew by 120 percent. Bajaj Hindustan reported a sugar recovery rate of 0.6 percent at its Uttar Pradesh unit, 10.05 percent at its Gola unit and 9.79 percent at its Palia unit. The company was able to raise its profitability due to proper cost control. During the period, its total expenditure grew by 34 percent, while the other income grew by 40 percent. The other income includes sales of by-products such as bagasse, molasses and lease rent. (ag)(vr)

Cipla posted a net profit of Rs56 crore on a turnover of Rs322.75 crore for the first half of 1998-99. It is the third largest pharmaceutical company in India with a market share of 4.2 percent.
