COLOUR TV SALES DROP 30 PER CENT
Article Abstract:
Sales of colour television sets fell by 25-30 percent in January 1999. The Government of India plans to raise the excise duty on colour television sets from 18 percent to 35-40 percent in the next budget. According to an ORG-GFK study, the volume growth of colour television sets slumped from 78 percent in June 1998 at 274,300 units to 17 percent at 247,500 units in December 1998. Producers of colour television sets are offering 4-6 percent discount to dealers. According to the Consumer Electronics and Television Manufacturers Association, customers are not interested in buying even though they know that the prices of colour television sets would increase by Rs1,500-2,000. The market share of Akai has fallen from 13 percent to 6 percent. The prices of colour television sets have decreased by 22-25 percent. There is no growth in value. (rk) (kvr)

Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd has increased its domestic sales by 26 percent in the first half of 1998-99. It sold 920,000 tonnes of steel in the domestic market against 731,000 tonnes in the first half of 1997-98. The company's overall sales, including exports, increased by 5 percent to 1.029 million tonnes against 981,000 tonnes in the first half of 1997-98. Its revenues increased by 2 percent to Rs1405 crore against Rs1375 crore. (khr)
