COMPUTECH TO DIVERSIFY, PLANS FERRO ALLOY UNIT
Article Abstract:
Computech International of Calcutta plans to diversify into the ferro alloy sector by setting up a conversion plant in one of the West Asian countries. The company has already started negotiations with the governments of Oman, Qatar and Abu Dhabi for possible joint ventures. The initial investment will be around $25 million and a separate company will be set up to take up the project. The technical consultancy will come from Ispat Alloys of Mittals. Computech will have major holding in the equity, in which the foreign partner also will hold stake. One of the participants in the equity is likely to be the government of the country where the project will come up. (gsh)

NOBLE FERRO ALLOY MAKERS SEEK SAFEGUARD

Domestic noble ferro alloy manufacturers have asked the government to impose a specific levy of Rs100 a kilogram (kg) for ferro molybdenum (FeMo) and Rs275 for a kg of ferro vanadium (FeVa) on the international prices. The government of India has earlier levied 20 percent duty on ad valorem basis. The prices of FeMo have declined from $10.4 a kg in January 1998 to $7.5 in December 1998. The prices of FeVa has declined from $28 a kg to $13 a kg between January 1998 to December 1998. The export prices of noble ferro alloys from China and CIS countries are lower than international prices. The ferro alloys sector has a capacity utilisation of 65 percent. (rk)(m)

MILAN MINERALS PLANS Rs70 Cr FERRO-ALLOY PLANT IN HASSAN
Article Abstract:
Milan Minerals Pvt Limited (MMPL) of Bangalore will invest Rs70 crore to set up a ferro-alloy plant at Hassan in Karnataka. MMPL may opt for public issue route to part finance the project. A major part of the funding will be through internal accruals. It is also negotiating with financial institutions for raising funds for the project. MMPL has manganese and ferro- alloy processing units at Shimoga in Karnataka and Hindupur in Andhra Pradesh. It plans to shift the project to Andhra Pradesh if the Karnataka government fails to give sops it had asked for. (gs)
