Cosmo Films, a major player in the BOPP films segment, showed a negative growth of 17.4 percent in its turnover at Rs77.31 crore in 1997-98 against Rs94.27 crore in 1996-97. It incurred a net loss of Rs1.44 crore in 1997-98 against a net profit of Rs7.07 crore in 1996-97. Its interest costs also increased by 43.8 percent due to its infusion of Rs5.5 crore in another group company and expenditure of Rs10 crore to revamp its third production line. Exports of Rs12.44 crore contributed about 30 percent in terms of volumes in 1997-98. It has posted a net loss of Rs3.9 crore on a turnover of Rs28 crore in the first quarter of 1998-99. (khr)

Polyplex Corporation has an installed capacity to produce 15,000 tonnes of polyester films per annum. The company, which exports about 55-60 percent of its production, has been adversely affected by the fall in international prices of polyester films from $2.8 per kg at the end of 1995 to $1.1 per kg now. Its net profit decreased to Rs7.35 crore on a turnover of Rs103.24 crore in 1997-98 against a net profit of Rs9.41 crore on a turnover of Rs107.61 crore in 1996-97. It posted a net profit of Rs1.9 crore in the first quarter of 1998-99. (khr)
