CTV MARKET GROWS BY 40% IN 9-MONTH PERIOD
Article Abstract:
A recent ORG survey has revealed 40 percent growth in the colour television (CTV) market during January-September 1998 (6 percent during the same period of 1997). Volume-wise, total sales were 2,583,900 CTVs. The CTV market increased by 44 percent during January-March 1998 due to the monetary benefit that accrued from the implementation of the Pay Commission recommendations. As per the study, the north zone grew by 34 percent, the east zone by 12 percent, the west zone by 30 percent and the south zone by 25 percent. The 21-inch segment grew by 41 percent, the 20-inch one by 36.9 percent and the 14-inch one by 15.8 percent. The 29-inch segment grew by 2.1 percent and the Home Theatre System sector by one percent, according to the survey. (ag) (kvr)

VIL REVISES OFFER PRICE TO Rs165

Videocon International Ltd (VIL) has increased the offer price for acquisition of two percent stake in the company by the promoters, the Dhoots. The offer price has been increased from Rs140 to Rs165 per share. VIL's share price crossed the original offer price of Rs140 and increased to Rs151 on May 25, 1998. Unit Trust of India (UTI) and General Insurance Corporation (GIC) hold around 9 percent stake in the Rs70 crore equity of VIL. The promoters have also made an open offer to UTI and GIC to acquire five percent stake in VIL at Rs165 per share. The offer price may be increased further, if the market price goes beyond Rs165. SAMSUNG INDIA TO EXPORT CTVs TO LANKA, BANGLADESH FROM Q2

Samsung India Electronics Limited (SIEL) has decided to begin export of colour televisions (CTVs) from its Noida unit from the second quarter of 1999. SIEL plans to export 25,000 to 50,000 CTVs during the year. It intends to export CTVs to SAARC countries, including Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. It has set sales target of four lakh CTV units for 1999. Its Noida unit has capacity to produce four lakh sets per day. (gs)(psr)
