TYRES MOVE SLOW
Article Abstract:
The Automotive Tyre Manufacturers' Association has lowered the target for exports of tyres for 1998-99 to Rs750 crore. It had earlier projected exports of Rs900-Rs1,000 crore. South-east Asian countries have not completely recovered from the financial crisis. Also, the Chinese brands are fiercely competing with Indian tyres in international markets. The association had hoped for better trade in west Asia and USA to compensate for the poor sales in south-east Asian countries. Exports of truck and bus tyres have been falling steadily. While production of tyres in India increased by 9 percent, their exports dropped by 5 percent during April-November 1998. Exports of truck and bus tyres fell from 10.79 lakh in April- November 1997 to 9.86 lakh in the same period of 1998. (um) (kvr)
