Can spring be far behind?
Article Abstract:
UK economic growth has slowed even further during winter 1995/96, with output growing by an annual rate of 1.5% in the second half of 1995 vs the peak level of 4% in 1994. The early part of 1996 is not expected to show much improvement, with exports expected to be depressed by weak foreign demand and industrial activity weakened by destocking. However, this weakness is expected to be a short-term one, and there seems cause for optimism over demand and output during the second half of 1996.

Western Europe
Article Abstract:
The economic outlook for western Europe has deteriorated, with average real GDP growth now forecast at 2.1% for 1996 vs the earlier prediction of 2.7%. The growth slowdown is largely due to inventory correction, wi th orders and output falling as stocks of finished goods built up: this in turn led to higher unemployment in France and Germany. Growth has also been affected by budgetary consolidation as governments strive to meet the fiscal goals in the Maastricht Treaty.

Asia
Article Abstract:
The economic outlook for Asia in 1996 seems promising, following the generally strong growth recorded in 1995. Average real GDP growth in Asia is put at slightly over 8% for 1995, with China recording growth of 10.2%, South Korea 9.5%, Malaysia 9.5% and India 6%. In 1996 growth may be moderated by political issues in some nations and by the need to act to cool an overheated economy.
