Road kill: government acts to slow highway slaughter
Article Abstract:
The South Korean government is pursuing a policy of improved traffic safety to cut the number of fatalities from automobile accidents. Police enforcement of traffic laws is highlighted in a campaign known as Traffic Life 5,000. The chances of traffic fatality are 10 times higher than in the US, with 11,640 deaths and 326,000 severe injuries in 1992. Drunk driving was already emphasized in 1992 enforcement crackdowns, and it only accounts for less than 3% of traffic deaths, so other traffic laws are now in focus.
