Cash and carry: Japanese trucking firm at heart of financial scandal
Article Abstract:
A host of bribery scandals have been uncovered in Japan and the worst is the Sagawa Kyubin (SK) financial scandal which involves top politicians and criminals. The SK group of companies' irregular loan guarantee machination was discovered in the stock market crash of 1990. It was further indirectly unraveled as a result of a power struggle within the group. As the loans were traced, investigators found the bribes extended to almost all politicians including past and immediate prime ministers. Other shocking discoveries were the financial ties of SK with the Inagawa-Kai and Aizu Kotetsu criminal gangs.

Questionable company
Article Abstract:
Japanese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Michio Watanabe's involvement in a Japanese official development assistance (ODA) funded project in Indonesia is being questioned. Watanabe, however, denies any involvement and claims that he would never profit from any ODA project. The presence of an associate of Watanabe in the company that awarded the contract has refocused public attention on the questionable practice of corporations involved in ODA projects putting politicians on their payroll. Documents prove that this practice has been going on for quite some time now.

Clouded vision: agency divisions hamper intelligence effort
Article Abstract:
The sorry state of Japanese defense intelligence has been amply demonstrated during such crises as the attempted coup in Moscow in Aug 1991, the Iraq-Kuwait War and the buildup of nuclear weapons by North Korea. Information arrived after the incidents have occurred. Military intelligence in Japan is undertaken by several entities who vie for limited resources and whose functions are duplicative. The need for a more rational system has been pinpointed.
