Catering to the fickle tastes of the business traveller

For the third consecutive year, Intercontinental Hotels Corp. has been named the best overseas host for business travelers in a poll conducted by Executive Travel and Expotel Hotel of the Year awards association. Intercontinental Hotels has operating properties in 45 nations around the world, reports corporate trading profits of $55.6 million (on turnover of $557.7 million) for 1985, and cites its hotels in London, Paris, Vienna and Geneva as its best performers. Currently, the international hotel firm is headquartered in New York City. The firm's management notes that traveling businessmen are attracted to the leisure and exercise facilities offered by large hotels, rather than personal amenities packages such as special soaps and cosmetics. The success of any hotel depends upon the food service it provides and the speed with which it processes check-in and check-out.

Why 'nothing goes wrong' in Mandarin Oriental flagships
Article Abstract:
The Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group (founded in 1961) established its flagship hotels, The Mandarin Hotel in Hong Kong and The Oriental Hotel in Bangkok, in 1968, by taking over long-existing hotel properties. (The Oriental in Bangkok was begun in 1876.) In 1986, for the sixth consecutive year, The Oriental was named as the best hotel in the world by a poll of international bankers. The hotels' operating policies, their amenities, and their leadership (provided by Kurt Wachveitl and Jurg Tuscher). The Mandarin Hotel was also named best hotel in the world in another poll. The gross revenues (or total group turnover) for The Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group in 1985 amounted to 1,044 million Hong Kong dollars, a 20 percent improvement over 1984 revenues.
