Cathay Pacific posts 1998 loss, sees no relief

Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. posted its first full-year loss in 35 years in 1998. The carrier also said that it there are no signs that it will recover in 1999. Cathay posted a loss of HK$542 million (US$69.9 million) for the 1998 year. In 1997, the Hong Kong-based carrier posted HK$1.69 billion in net profits. Had fuel prices stayed at 1997 levels in 1998, Cathay would have suffered a loss that would have been HK$1 billion bigger.
