Chang aims to expand role of Taiwan on world stage
Article Abstract:
Newly-appointed Taiwanese Foreign Minister John Chang plans to expand Taiwan's diplomatic ties around the world. His plans have been strongly criticized by the Chinese government which has branded him a traitor. Being the illegitimate grandson of Gen. Chiang Kai-Shek, Chang's efforts to forge an independent foreign policy has been viewed by China as running counter to his grandfather's hope of reuniting the two countries. Despite such criticisms, Chang remains committed to his foreign policy plan and assured of Pres. Lee Teng-hui's favor.

Possible new rules raise appeal of Taiwan funds
Article Abstract:
Some fund managers believe that Taiwanese closed-end funds are good investment options, especially now that they are trading some 17% below their actual value. Many investors are eagerly awaiting Taiwanese government approval for the conversion of the funds to open-ended status. However, some quarters warn against betting on the odds of a fund's conversion. In addition, investors are advised to choose funds with less stringent voting rules.

Experts warn of pitfalls in latest craze in Taiwan over newly issued warrants
Article Abstract:
Warrants are normally used to give investors the right to purchase an underlying stock within a given period at a set price. In Taiwan where they are still considered as something of a novelty, interest in warrants is driven by a desire to pinpoint coming issues and then buy up the underlying shares even before the warrant comes out. Many analysts are warning Taiwanese investors against investing too much money in high-risk instruments.
