Charges of the heat and light brigade
Article Abstract:
The deregulation of the gas and electricity market in the UK has resulted in up to 6 million domestic customers switching suppliers, although the short-term gains of lower bills may be limited due to the competitive nature of the market. Business users need to ensure a new supplier will not only provide cheap energy but a competitive after-service contract which is more comprehensive than other suppliers. The government is backing a drive to make both domestic and commercial energy users more environmentally aware of the cost of heating and lighting, which may ultimately drive costs up through taxation.

Darkness on the edge of town
Article Abstract:
Power failures in US Mid West states during the summers of 1997 and 1998 illustrate the need for deregulation in the energy industry. These states suffered unusual pressures on energy supply, due to a range of extreme weather conditions, and prices rocketed. Electricity prices more than doubled in 1998 and some companies were forced to pay more than four times their normal charges in order to remain competitive. This region had not introduced competition in the energy industry, which was unmodernized and did not have structures to ensure reliability of electricity supply.

The power and the glory?
Article Abstract:
Deregulation of the UK energy industry has been occurring since 1990 when the largest customers were offered the opportunity to choose their electricity supplier. The process continued with the gas and electricity market opening completely to all customers by mid-1999. The government has, in 1998, increased its pressure on utilities to lower prices and raise standards of service, but the freedom to switch between suppliers gives the real power to affect improvements to users, if they can overcome their reported confusion about the situation.
