Charity begins at work
Article Abstract:
Companies are increasingly organising their charitable giving in a more formal way. This may be illustrative of a more caring society but employers also benefit from the pride which employees feel towards a company's project. One example of a company project is the Persula Foundation set up by UK hi-fi retailer Richer Sounds. The company donates 5% to the foundation which has a range of projects, including the provision of information screens aimed at people who have recently become homeless in London, and the provision of business expertise to larger projects.

Strengthening the links; year out
Article Abstract:
Planning education has doubled its student intake recently and placements for students on years out or sandwich years are increasingly hard to find. Job placement is popular with students, employers and the public sector. Placement also can be in demand with transport bodies, builders or consultancies. More employers need to be found, whether through improved links or overseas placements. Unpaid work may be necessary, although not popular.

Strengthening the links; project work
Article Abstract:
Project work has always been used extensively in planning education to link theory and practice. At the beginning of the course they are necessarily limited, but later are closely related to client need and local realities. Students then give a presentation of their ideas to the clients, who have been closely involved from the start.
