Charoen stocks up for Thai liquor war
Article Abstract:
Thai whiskey mogul Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi has raised some $500 million in loans and bonds using his company's whiskey stocks as collateral. This unusual financing scheme, which was arranged by Merrill Lynch Phatra Securities, will permit Charoen's Sang Som Group to acquire interests in as many as 13 distilleries. It will also allow Charoen to fend off the challenge of new players in the liquor market from which the Sang Som Group derives 80% of its revenues.

As Japanese embrace foreign beverages, local retailers lower domestic prices
Article Abstract:
Domestic beer prices in Japan are going down. This is unprecedented since markdown on beer violate an unwritten law in Japan's industry. Japanese managers use cheaper imports and keep a list of private-brand items to squeeze prices. The seven-billion-liter beer market is drastically affected by this development. Small retailers are trying to keep up by cutting domestic beer prices.
