Chief editor leaves top Malaysian daily newspaper
Article Abstract:
Utusan Malaysia, Malaysia's leading newspaper, witnessed the resignation of its editor-in-chief, Johan Jafaar, on Jul. 14, 1998. Industry experts stated that Jafaar's resignation reflects the growing political pressure for more optimistic reporting on Malaysia's financial crisis. Jafaar submitted his resignation to Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, who owns the United Malays National Organization party that largely owns the Utusan Malaysia group. Jafaar's resignation followed after the prime minister criticized the Malaysian press for its coverage of lost baggage and delays at the country's new airport.

Belle is falling out of favor
Article Abstract:
Gaming and property company Belle Corp's highly valued shares are taking a beating because jai alai's comeback in the Philippines is not as profitable as initially projected. The lackluster performance of Belle's stock can be attributed to a combination of gambling scandals and the strong presence of bingo and lotteries. In addition, congressional opposition to jai alai has served to weaken its appeal to the public. Another factor that has added to Belle's woes are reports of boardroom conflicts between warring shareholders.
