China opens up
Article Abstract:
The US and China have signed a trade agreement which has yet to go through Congress. There are questions as to China's ability to open up trade as promised, and on the impact of free trade in China. The agreement will be beneficial for the Chinese economy even if not all the promises are kept. Poor farmers in China are likely to be hit by competition from US agribusiness, and state industries will also be affected by competition. China should be brought into the world trading order, and the US was right to take this opportunity to do so.
