China's advances on free trade spark worries in Japan

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations and China have agreed to hold free trade talks. This announcement has led some to speculate that Japan is being left out of the economic integration of Asia. However, Junichiro Koizumi, Japan's prime minister, has categorized such speculation as overblown. Issues concerning Chinese-Japanese economic relations are discussed in further detail.

In retaliation to Japanese restrictions on Chinese agricultural products, the Chinese government is imposing duties on Japanese automobiles, air conditioners, and cell phones. Japanese business leaders seem to be remaining neutral and claim that both governments should change their protectionistic practices.
