Chinese whispers
Article Abstract:
Introducing a standardized language for the whole of the country has been a politically sensitive issue in China for many years. It has been possible to establish Putonghua, or common language, as the language of government, schools and universities, and most of the country's urban residents can now speak at least a bit of this language. However, China still has eight regional dialects which are all separate language groups. These dialects are related, but speakers of one dialect cannot understand those who speak another dialect. Linguistic variety remains a key feature in China.

Less capital for Chinese companies: Foreign banks cut lending to China
Article Abstract:
Guangdong International Trust and Investment Corp's (GITIC's) collapse has spurred foreign banks to cut back on their lending in China. In Oct 1998, GITIC was closed by Beijing because of the institution's debts totalling $4.3 bil. It was announced in Jan 1999 that GITIC would apply for bankruptcy and creditors could claim what they are owed by going through the legal system in the country. Foreign banks learned that loans registered with the State Administration of Foreign Exchange would not be repaid by Beijing.
