Chocks away: an acrimonious dispute between America and Japan over international airlines looks set to get worse

Japan and the US are locked in battle over air rights, which are now based on a 1952 agreement weighted toward the US in 'beyond' rights. Japanese airlines want the same ability to pick up passengers in the US as the US has in Japan, but a pure 'open skies' agreement would still be unfair.

Many large airline companies are attempting to buy into foreign airlines despite government barriers. British Airlines has attempted to purchase shares of airlines in the US, Russia, Germany, France and Australia. Other European airlines hope to dominate the common market as well.
