Novartis to prune brand portfolio
Article Abstract:
Novartis AG plans to narrow its Nutrition division's focus to medical nutrition and the Gerber Products Co. unit. Novartis will divest itself of several brand names such as Wasa crisp bread, Diatroelle sugar free candy, Roland and OLW snack foods. The company will also fold its over the counter drug operations into the Nutrition division. The Gerber brand will expand, with aggressive promotional support, into the specialized child nutrition market and pediatric nonprescription medicines.

Hoechst to sell significant Clariant stake
Article Abstract:
Hoechst AG is planning to sell off either a share or the entirety of its 45% portion of Clariant AG. Clariant is a speciality chemicals maker based in Switzerland. Hoechst announced that it was planning to sell off a major Clariant share before July 1999 by way of a worldwide placement of secondary shares. The placement will probably be combined with a bonder offering that is convertible to Clariant shares.
