Production of footwear in Germany increased 1% to DM6.56 billion in 1998. Retail sales reached around 320 million-240 million pairs, worth DM16 billion-17 billion. German footwear market is analysed in detail.

Retail sales of textiles and clothing in Germany fell to DM120.1 billion in 1997 from DM126.5 billion in 1995. Retail sales of footwear stood at around 330-340 million pairs in 1997, with volume output in Germany falling more than 8% to 40 million pairs. German clothing manufacturers had turnover of DM22.4 billion in 1997. Production by German footwear and clothing manufacturers is expected to stabilise in 1998, with exports having risen nearly 10% in early-1998. Retail sales are likely to fall marginally by value.

Clothing and footwear in Italy
Article Abstract:
Made-up clothing output in Italy grew 4% by value to L20,140 billion in 1996, with similar growth for both women's and men's clothing. Made-up clothing imports declined 1.5% by value, with imports of underwear falling 15% by value and 22% by volume. Exports grew 6% by volume and over 7% by value, with babywear exports growing 20.8% by value and girls' and women's outerwear exports growing 8.6% by value. Germany accounted for 17.6% of exports by value in 1996. Italy's footwear and clothing markets are expected to grow slightly in 1998 and 1999.
