The Dutch clothing and footwear industry saw domestic sales rise by 5% in 1997, with export turnover up by 5% and clothing production up by 4.5%. Consumer expenditure on clothing rose by nearly 5%, and there was an average price increase of 1%. Footwear sales rose slightly although volume sales dropped to about 33 million pairs. Growth in the clothing and footwear market is likely to be only 2-4% a year.

The French textile industry experienced a 3.1% growth in turnover during 1998, with exports up by 7%. The total textile market is valued at around 226 billion francs, with clothing accounting for 170 billion francs. Footwear production for 1998 fell by 7% to 125.5 million pairs, with turnover down 1% to 13.8 billion francs.
