Co-operative buildings: Buildings that respond to use, new systems to support teamwork, chips in everything - just some ideas for integrating buildings and computing
Article Abstract:
A conference in Darmstadt, Co-operative Buildings, covered several developments in integrating building and computing. Much of the work is inspired by Mark Weiser from Xerox PARC at Palo Alto in the US. He sees the building fabric acting as an interface, with each surface becoming a screen. Norbert Streitz and colleagues are development i-Land, a way of developing new environments for new work practices. Projects include CommChairs combining a built-in power supply with wireless networking, and InteractTable, a touch-sensitive tabletop screen.

Two into one does go: a West Sussex school has been doubled in size by wrapping new buildings around the existing ones, integrating them with barely visible seams
Article Abstract:
Durrington High School in West Sussex overcame serious structural problems in one of its two buildings by demolishing the unsound school and extending the other building by wrapping new buildings around the existing one. This created new circulation spaces between the two and a new two storey mall. Language labs were reorganised, creating further circulation space and a new fitness suite was created.
