Tourism Toronto presents Stages, Toronto's Celebration of the Lively Arts, to attract more visitors. Toronto, Canada, the number-one visitor destination in the country, attracts more than 20 million people every year. Launched in 1997, Stages is an annual winter festival that features over a dozen of Toronto's finest theatrical, dance and musical performances. Visitors are offered by participating companies added-value bonuses such as backstage tours, free gifts and discounts. To support Stages '98, Tourism Toronto launched an eight-page, four-color program guide in a half a million weekend newspapers in key markets in Ontario, Canada, and US border cities.

Val-Pak triples its ad spending

Val-Pak of Toronto, Ontario, has hiked its national advertising budget threefold in the past two years. This boosts contract sales per year for Val-Pak customers by 50%. Val-Pak is using the record amount of C$350,000 in its 1998 budget. Val-Pak will be concentrating on trade and consumer publications, and television for its marketing purposes. The company is the biggest Canadian co-operative direct mail firm. It has 44 franchises in the country and an additional 205 in Canada. Over 4.3 million firms and residences received its mail-out six to eight times per year.

WPP's Brandz quantifies consumer brand loyalty

WPP Group plc's new brand research methodology called Brandz quantifies consumer brand loyalty by examining the factors behind consumers' purchase decisions. A bonding score has accurately projected the share of category spending the brand receives, according to WPP, which assessed 3,500 corporate and product brands in 50 categories through interviews with 70,000 consumers in China, Japan, Germany, France,UK, Brazil and the US. WPP, which has shelled out C$9.2 million in the start-up phase, is offering Brandz to clients at any WPP operational unit without charge.
