Coming in from the cold
Article Abstract:
An exhibition at the Barbican Art Gallery, London, England, comprises part of the collection displayed at the Museum of Artistic Culture, Petrogad, Russia, in the early 1920s. The government of the time maintained that artists should have responsibility for collecting contemporary art so Modernist artist Malevich was able to acquire around 500 works for the museum. Centralist leaders took the collection into the state archive in 1926, but this at least protected it during more repressive times. The Barbican exhibition, 'New Art for a New Era', follows the layout used in Petrograd.

Swiss sachlichkeit
Article Abstract:
Diener and Diener Architekten is based in Basle, Switzerland and draws on the architectural ideas of Hannes Meyer. The exhibition of the practice's work is entitled 'From City to Detail' and consisits of well presented working drawings, small models and photographs. Although claiming the ideals of the Swiss Modernist movement, much of the practice's work appears to accept the world as it is and there is little indication of any desire to change society.
