Commanding heights
Article Abstract:
The Hongkong stockmarket has experienced a recent boom which shows no signs of ending soon even after a probable minor correction in the third quarter. The Hang Seng Index has gone up by 33% to 5,700 and could reach 6,000 by the end of July. The market has been unusually strong as the liquidity situation is positive with only a modest overall drain even though it has long been overbought and still looks relatively cheap with a price-earnings ratio of 14.7 and a potential dividendyield of 4%.

On the mend
Article Abstract:
Standard Chartered Bank PLC posted a 37% increase in group pre-tax profits despite minimal asset growth and a 130 million pound sterling writeoff in the UK alone. Profits generated from its Hong Kong operations were a significant factor in the bank's recovery. Between 1989 to 1991, trading profit in the East Asian region rose to 172 million pounds sterling. Similarly, return on assets in the region increased from 1% to 1.6% during the same period.
