Commando confusion: US Green Berets stir political pot
Article Abstract:
The arrival of the US Army Special Forces, known as the GreenBerets, in Pakistan was perceived by opposition leaders as a covert operation designed to take out Afghan rebel leader Gulbuddin Hekmatyar. Pakistani army chief Abdul Waheed downplayed the rumor, stating that the US presence is part of a month-long joint exercise with Pakistani soldiers. However, the confirmation on the part of the government regarding the presence of US Green Berets in the country has only fueled further speculations concerning its clandestine activities in Afganistan.

Opening moves
Article Abstract:
Pakistan's relations with the US have been deeply strained because of the US's opposition to Pakistan's nuclear weapons program. The US suspended military and economic assistance to Pakistan in 1990. Pakistan's army chief General Asif Nawaz Janjua recently went to the US and received assurance of continued supply of US military spare parts. Pakistan has asserted it will oppose a non-proliferation treaty unless it also applied to India. India's closer ties with the US could induce Pakistan to join a fundamentalist Muslim block.

The lost fighters: air force hit by US ban on arms sales
Article Abstract:
A US arms embargo has slowed Pakistan's purchase of 71 American-made F16 fighter airplanes. Pakistan agreed in Sep 1989 to pay $1.4 billion for the aircraft. However, since 1991 fears about Pakistan's development of nuclear weapons has caused the US to stop further delivery of the F16s in accordance with the Pressler Amendment which makes support for nuclear nonproliferation a condition for arms sales. The embargo caused Pakistan to delay paying a $92 million installment on the F16s in Jul 1993.
