Commerzbank tops forecasts, lifts profit 47%

Commerzbank AG posted a 47% increase in earnings for the 1998 year. The improved earnings mainly came about from one-time gains for sales from stocks in other companies. The company also benefited from solid income figures. Commerzbank said that its profits after taxes increased to 1.87 billion marks ($1.08 billion) for the year ending on December 31, 1998. In 1997, the company posted profits of 1.27 billion marks.
