RJR Nabisco has entered an agreement with the Fontaneda family for the control of Galletas Fontaneda of Spain in August 1996 for Ptas4,500 million. Marbu, a Spanish subsidiary of RJR Nabisco, acquired control of the company for the sum in the deal, which included the sale of all facilities of Galletas Fontaneda. Galletas Fontaneda, whose brand names are continued to be used under the new ownership, was most important for its third position in the biscuit market of Spain.

The French tobacco market grew by 5.7% between 1996 and 1997 to post a total market value of Ffr 76.2 billion. The sector encompasses cigarettes, cigars and smoking tobacco. Cigarettes dominate the sector, accounting for 92.6% of the market's total value in 1997. Their popularity can be attributed to their ease of use and wide variety offered in the market. The main distribution system for tobacco products is the country's 35,000 tobacconists.
