Companies say it's time for APEC to deliver the goods
Article Abstract:
The business community is beginning to question whether the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum will contribute to economic growth in the region in view of its lack of immediate and concrete benefits for business. Seven years after it was launched, its achievements are limited to geostrategic moves, including the creation of a community of 18 diverse economies and eliciting US involvement in Asian affairs. Its supporters, on the other hand, contend that it is too soon to judge the APEC, given its enormous task of achieving consensus among economies of varied size and sophistication.

Forum pushes new strategy: Open markets one by one
Article Abstract:
The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum is adopting the sectoral method in addressing trade liberalization after APEC's success with an Information Technology Agreement at its 1996 summit at Subic Bay in the Philippines. Nonetheless, because of the wide diversity of interests of APEC members, they are finding it hard to agree on which sector should be opened first. Analysts claim APEC should establish a timetable to open the markets in order to sustain the thrust of trade liberalization.
