Competition lowers the costs of medicines for consumers
Article Abstract:
Limiting government intervention in pharmaceutical pricing enables companies to compete and eventually lower the prices of pharmaceutical preparations. A study of empirical pricing in Denmark, US, Germany, the Netherlands, South Africa and the UK shows that allowing customers to have free access to pharmaceuical markets has a considerable economic advantage. This advantage will be lost if the government will impose regulations that will limit access in favor of safety and efficacy.

Balms for the poor
Article Abstract:
There is a need for new drugs to treat illnesses that affect the poor, but pharmaceutical companies tend to focus on drugs that affect people in rich countries. The companies have little incentive to tackle the health problems of people who cannot afford to buy drugs. Health problems can hamper economic development. Public and private sector alliances are one way of tackling this problem. The Medicines for Malaria Venture is an exampleof such cooperation.
