Trade barriers protecting the US garment and textile industry are being removed, and this is likely to mean jobs losses and a drop in market share. Yet the industry is already mechanized, and the US grows cotton, and fashion garments are price insensitive, so the industry will be less badly hit than some observers might think.

Textile and apparel firm Coats Viyella is determined to compete against low-cost Asian producers. Under the direction of CEO Neville Bain, Coats has moved labor-intensive commodity manufacturing to low-cost countries but retained dyeing and assembly factories close to European customers.

Dress code: stamping out sweatshops
Article Abstract:
A task force comprised of labor unions, apparel manufacturers and human rights organizations worked with Pres Clinton to develop the Apparel Industry Partnership to eliminate sweatshops. The provisions of the agreement are discussed.
