Congress turns to legendary Gandhi name for direction
Article Abstract:
Sonia Gandhi is credited with unifying the Bharatiya Janata Party of India by her decision to run for public office in the country's February elections. The 51-year-old Italian-born widow of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, who was assassinated in 1991, is likely to win due to the strong political background of her family which includes Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira. Though, Mrs. Gandhi's economic plans have not been disclosed, she has advocated the reformation of the party's Hindu-chauvinistic and ethnocentric views.

Ban on Bandh strikes at heart of Gandhi's program; state ruling on political protest touches nerve in ambitious economy and boisterous democracy
Article Abstract:
The Indian government is banning political protests by citing its being 'unconstitutional.' An Indian high court has ruled that political protests or 'bandhs' tend to 'trample' on the rights of other Indians and translate to reduced economic growth because of lost production. Bandhs were the cornerstone of Mohandas Gandhi's efforts to cripple the British government's economy but politicians maintain the bandhs have outlived their usefulness and no longer have a place in the Indian economy.
