Coupon industry takes it in-store
Article Abstract:
NCH Promotional Services of Markham, Ontario, reveals that in-store couponing is the best-selling sector of the voucher business. Speaking before the annual forum by the Audit Bureau of Circulations and the Coupon Industry Association of Canada, NCH President Reg Marrison stated that in-store coupon distribution will see a 90% growth in 1998 on a year-to-year level. In comparison, distribution through free-standing inserts will be relatively stable. Despite the surging distribution in some coupon segments, redemption is reportedly at its lowest in 10 years, with only 4% of the total 2.9 billion direct-to-consumer coupons distributed to be likely redeemed.

Gas retailers try corner store niche
Article Abstract:
Gasoline station operators are increasingly inclined to establish their own branded store concepts, especially with the lower profitability of petroleum products. Companies such as Sunoco, Esso and Shell see the branded store concept as a means of improving their profitability. Many of the same firms are already providing their clients with a more pleasant shopping experience and a greater choice in the available food items.
