Poland's Solidarity Electoral Action (AWS) alliance, made up of around 30 parties centred around the Solidarity trade union, faces an uncertain future. The AWS-led government has made some modest progress, but this will not continue unless greater cohesion can be achieved within the alliance. Opponents of Prime Minister Jerzy Buzek have so far been reluctant to take action, as this would create an opportunity for the former communists. However, they will make increasingly heavy demands in return for their continued support.
