Crucial percentage
Article Abstract:
Mexico is in a dilemma over the disputed local content percentage in negotiations for the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). While Mexico wants to draw more Asian investors, the US wants to make the treaty an insurance against Asian competitors operating just outside its borders. US negotiators want foreign companies to utilize at least 60% North American content in manufactured products to qualify for free trade. Asian companies, on the other hand, have asked Mexico to argue for 50% local content at most. The situation is further muddled by the issue of how to measure local content.
