Cultural collage: Vietnam's new breed of artists leaves lasting impressions
Article Abstract:
Artists in Vietnam are exploring a range of possibilities once inconceivable, including images of the country as perceived by foreigners. US-born Bradford Evans, son of a fighter pilot who flew in Vietnam, uses readily accessible symbols such as the bas-relief from a Dong Son drum, cleverly manipulated. The country's only openly gay artist, Truong Tan, shows a more private world of distinct masculinity, Chinese cosmology, and number magic. Other native and foreign-born figures and their role in the art world are also discussed.

Cultural revolution
Article Abstract:
Unexpected controversy engulfed the decision by Taiwan's National Palace Museum to allow an exhibition of its treasures in the US, starting at NY's Metropolitan Museum of Art. Observers speculate the uproar may have been due to a spontaneous public decision that the art represented its national identity and fragile sense of security, or that an ad-hoc alliance between impetuous art lovers and opportunistic politicians was to blame. The museum ended up reneging on its agreement, holding back 23 of the 475 items.

Macau's cultural bet pays off
Article Abstract:
The Macao International Music Festival took place from October 12-27 1996. The festival has been held in Macao, a Portuguese territory in the South China Sea, since 1987, funded by the casinos. This is not a profit-making venture, and tickets are very cheap, and the events which take place within churches are free. The festival has led to a focus on tourism with a cultural edge. There are proposals to make the 1997 festival even better.
