Investment company Jardine Fleming Investment Management is attempting to mend its tattered reputation in Hong Kong following an investment scandal concerning its star trader Colin Armstrong. In August 1996, London and Hong Kong regulators said that they would discipline Jardine Fleming for breaching investment codes of conduct within its fund management arm. The malpractice centered on Colin Armstrong who was charged with delaying charging deals to accounts and making substantial personal profits. Armstrong resigned from the company.

Asian markets have been weak in 1996 and this makes a fund manager's job more difficult. The professional fund management industry is developing rapidly in Asia and control over trading is increasing. Fund managers tend to call themselves active and most fund managers claim that they perform better than stock price indexes. Track records include 1993 which was a boom year, but performance data may look different once this year no longer boosts averages.
