DENMARK: MEAT EXPORTERS' LOSSES LIMITED

The losses by major Danish meat exporters on the Japanese and Russian markets due to the foot and mouth disease are limited. Managing director Gert Kjeldsen of Steff-Houlberg, the second largest slaughter house company in Denmark says the Japanese and Russian import bans had rather limited effect on their earnings and Tican says the Japanese ban cost the company around DKr1mn (US$121,900). Danish Crown's managing director Kjeld Johannesen says the US market will be lost following the two-month import ban. Danish Crown's net losses in the US are around DKr60mn (US$7.3mn) a month. Danish Crown's losses in its biggest market, Japan, are limited.

Article Abstract:
Ritt Bjerregaard, the Danish Food minister is against the European Commission's proposal to grant subsidies to the European beef sector. The Commission says it is necessary to grant subsidies to beef producers in order to slow down production and prevent the re-emergence of large-scale stocks.
