DOMESTIC STEEL TO GET BACK IN SHAPE
Article Abstract:
The domestic steel producers can increase the prices of cold rolled products by eight percent and hot rolled products by five percent. The Budget has proposed an hike of five percent on import duty of CR products to 30 percent and additional 8 percent of duty on non modvatable imports. Steel Authority of India, Tata Steel, Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd are expected to revise the price of their products. CR products will increase by Rs1,800 to Rs2,000 per tonne and HR around Rs800 to Rs900 per tonne. SLUMP HITS SPONGE IRON SECTOR, 3 UNITS TO DOWN SHUTTERS
Article Abstract:
India's sponge iron industry has been adversely affected due to recession in the steel industry. The three leading firms, Goldstar Steel and Alloys, Kumar Metallurgical Corporation and Tamil Nadu Sponge, have been closed. The companies which have been referred to Board for Industrial and Financial Reconstruction (BIFR) are; Nova Iron and Steel Company, Bihar Sponge Iron and Prakash Industries. The total installed capacity of the six units is 6.6 million tonnes per annum (mtpa). The total investment involved in these projects is around Rs5,000 crore. (gs)(psr)

HR COIL PRICES TO BE CUT BY $60 PER TONNE
Article Abstract:
An agreement has been reached between the producers of hot rolled (HR) coils and cold rolled (CR) coils to fix the prices of HR coils at $50-60 below the floor price of $302 per tonne. Sources say that the new price would be realistic and close to the price of $245 per tonne fixed by the anti-dumping authority. The manufacturers have decided to meet soon to finalise price differentials as a result of the budget proposals. (khr)
