Daimler bends: German capitalism

Daimler-Benz will soon become the first German firm listed on the New York Stock Exchange, thereby committing it to compliance with the US's stringent accounting regulations. The accounting rules will expose the firm's books to close examination by investors.

The Chicago Board of Trade now issues tradeable bonds that allow companies to produce one ton of sulfur dioxide pollution per purchased bond. Current EPA regulations will eventually extended to all industries and free allowances for pollution will drop 50%.

Capitalism without capital: Hungarian finance

The Budapest Stock Exchange has 48 registered traders but only 21 listed shares, a bad sign for capitalism in Hungary. Foreign investments and bank loans are dwindling. The government and most companies are raising capital with debt and foreign exchange.
