Newspaper editor Francis David Langhorne Astor, who has died at the age of 89, was something of a gentleman editor or gifted amateur, but he had a sharp eye for editing. Astor was determined that the 'Observer' should be witty, interesting to readers, have brilliant writing and not be pompous.

David Packard

Packard was a pioneer in business and technology and changed the economic landscape of California through his computer company, Hewlett Packard. He and partner Bill Hewlett gave rise to Silicon Valley, the high-tech mecca in the US. Packard's life is discussed.
