'Represento el pasado': political melodrama and Jesus Diaz's 'Lejania.'
Article Abstract:
Peter Brooks' and Janice Redway's analyses of contemporary literary criticism of melodrama and romance in European and American subjects reveal that their conclusions may also be applied to Latin American melodrama. The theories on melodrama suggest that it is rich in subversive potential and Jesus Diaz's 'Lejania' supports of this observation. In 'The Melodramatic Imagination,' Peter Brooks suggests that melodrama is a genre of excess and hyperbole. Ana Lopez, in her article 'Cellutoid Tears: Melodrama in the Old Mexican Cinema,' argues that only an excess of melodrama can help Latin American films in their competition with those of Hollywood.
