A matter-of-fact strangeness: Bill Traylor at the Ross Galleries
Article Abstract:
Some African-American collectors find the crudeness and simplicity of Bill Traylor's work to be unpleasant. But then there are others who admire his spontaneous style and the distinct African character of his works. It is ironic that this man whose paintings earn large sums of money today have lived in poverty for his entire life. He started out as a slave and later became a street painter at the age of 85. Art critics describe his style as a successful blending of the literal with the figurative and a personal vision with a universal one.
