Defending the franc

Edouard Balladur, the popular French prime minister, is attempting to protect the franc and at the same time move the country out of a worsening recession. The economy is saddled with a soaring deficit, and unemployment is expected to reach 12.5% by the end of 1993.

Article Abstract:
Banque de France and the German central bank are cooperating to promote a stable franc, but many right-wing French are pushing for devaluation. If the right defeats the socialists in the March, 1993, elections, devaluation will occur and interest rates may drop.

To fix or float exchange rates?

Europeans favor government control of currency markets even though all recent attempts, including the exchange-rate mechanism, have failed. The US and Japan have floating currency but Europe is probably better off with a stable system.
