Australian Prime Minister John Howard has presented a comprehensive defense treaty extending security cooperation in war against terrorism to Indonesia. The Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has shelved it on the grounds that it is being examined. The possible reasons for this stance of the Indonesian President are discussed.

Article Abstract:
One aftermath of the Indonesian bombings presumably conducted by Jemaah Islamiah, research conducted by scholars and experts who study terrorism have been all but ignored by the media. The result is that Asia is possibly getting a one-sided view of this group and terrorism in general.

The rise of Islamic extremist terrorism globally and especially in the Islamic countries is evaluated. The attempts of the moderates in Indonesia in protecting Asia's traditionally tolerant brand of Islam from the negative influence of the extremists are reviewed.
